FA International Football Coaches

Butch is currently the Coach Inclusion and Diversity manager for the Football Association, his key remit in this work includes transitioning professional players and grassroots coaches into meaningful employment into the professional game. He supports and mentors these coaches throughout this journey.

He also spent three years working for the Football Association as a coach developer delivering a range of courses from the Level 1 through to the new UEFA B award. His passion is watching players and coaches develop. In his time as coach educator he developed and shaped a coach education programme within his county which consistently delivered outstanding results and has impacted on hundreds of coaches on how to play, how to coach and how to support players through the new England DNA.

He currently holds the UEFA A licence only one of 9 South Asians who hold the award in England, he continues to workwith several professional football clubs on how football can become more diverse and more representative of the community it serves. Butch also hold a teaching award and for 14 years was the first team coach and tutor at Luton Sixth Form College where he led them to a number of football titles.

His 45 years of experience within the game as player and coach has enabled him to carve a creditable reputation within the industry and to this day he is as passionate about football as he was when he first kicked a ball.

Brian Peck

Brian has a vast amount of coaching experience, boasting 30 years’ service in sport and football.He is highly qualified holding the UEFA A Coaching Award and the FA A Licence. Goalkeeping award. Heis a FA Licenced Affiliate Tutor for the delivery of The FA Level 1, Level 2 courses, as well as FA Goalkeeper Level 1 and FA Goalkeeper Level 2 coaching awards plus the GK module for Level 3 courses.

He started working within football for the FA in the Sheffield area in 2001 and since then gained a reputation as one of the best coaches and coach educators in the country. During his time with the FA, Brian was responsible for creating and facilitating a coach education programme that qualified and developed 1000’s of coaches while working as Head of Football Development at Sheffield FA.

He left Sheffield FA in 2014 to start his own business working extensively from grassroots football to the professional game helping to deliver coaching and develop coaches as an FA Licensed Coach and FA Affiliate Coach Educator.

For a number of years Brian has worked with a number pf professional clubs and is currently working with Sheffield Wednesday Academy and the Sheffield FC Ladies team, who play in the FA Women`s Super League.

His business work ranges from carrying out football sessions in schools, working with College and University teams, private coaching with individuals and clubs, and as a FA Mentor in a number of grass root clubs.

Mr.Jamie Houchen

Head of FA Learning St. George’s Park, THE FA GROUP

Jamie has worked for The FA for 14 years, recruited to the role of Regional Development Manager for the East region, working in the National Game Division. Previously Jamie spent 10 years at Norwich City FC developing a Coach Education and Community Programme.

In 2006 Jamie joined FA Learning as the National Tutor Training Manager, tasked with the professionalisation of the Tutor Workforce, implementing formal tutor recruitment processes, annual licensing and quality assurance mechanisms to streamline the workforce across 7 disciplines from over 4000 deliverers down to 2000. Since 2008 Jamie has spent 3 separate periods as Acting Head of FA Learning and was appointed to the permanent role of Head of FA Learning in May 2012 as the business moved from Wembley Stadium to St George’s Park, the home for English Coach Education.

FA Learning has developed considerably over the last 4 years, with staff increasing from 12 to 40 and bespoke teams established to deliver an enhanced coaching pathway provision, content and coach and tutor support. More importantly every FA Learning course and coaching qualification has been fully modernised, with improved technical resources, increased methods of student engagement, and underpinned by a consistent Learning philosophy. Most recently Jamie has been instrumental in the establishment of The FA Licensed Coaches’ Club, which has established the professional recognition of active coaches in England and in just three years has developed into the biggest coach licensing scheme in the world supporting over 35,000 coaches working at all levels of the game.

Jamie remains an active FA Licensed Coach Education Tutor and holder of the prestigious UEFA A coaching diploma.

 

Mr.Steve Connolly

FA Skills Project Officer

Steve has worked for The FA for almost 8 years, recruited to the role of FA Skills Team Leader for County Durham, working in the Football Development Division. Steve is now FA Skills Project Officer for the North of England. Previously Steve spent 5 years at Middlesbrough FC in the Community Programme and 2 years at Hartlepool UTD FC in the Centre Of Excellence.

In 2007 Steve joined The FA Skills programme, delivering specialist coaching to boys and girls aged 5-11 whilst managing a team of fellow coaches. Since 2013 Steve has been the FA Skills Project Officer for the North of England, responsible for delivery of specialist 5-11 coaching in 13 counties, managing a total of 48 FA Skills Coaches.

The FA Skills Programme has developed considerably over the last 5 years, with staff increasing from 66 to 162 people. The programme is now located in every county in England with teams of coaches ranging in size from 2 to 7 people. The programme demonstrates best practice through delivery to 5- 11 year old grassroots boys and girls through a range of activities including school lessons, after school evening clubs, Charter Standard Club sessions and school holiday events. One of the main roles of the coaches is to support the development of teachers and coaches through exemplar delivery, coach and teacher workshops and periods of 1-1 support.

Steve has been an active FA Licensed Coach Education Tutor for 5 years and holds the UEFA B coaching diploma which he gained at 19 years old.

Alan Gillett

Alan Gillett is an English football coach who has worked primarily in England for The Football Association and a number of club sides. He is a Senior Regional Coach (South) at The Football Association.

Club Career Gillett has been involved in the management of Watford, Crystal Palace and Wimbledon, and was caretaker manager of Plymouth Argyle, alongside Gordon Nisbet, for two games in 1992.Gillett has also coached in Japan, Yemen and the United States.

International career Gillett was caretaker manager of Malawi in 2003. Gillett was manager of the Solomon Islands from 2004 to 2005.

Michael Matthews

Following a professional football career that began at Wolverhampton Wanderers in 1978, he went on to accumulate over 400 league games including spells at Hull City, Stockport County, Scunthorpe, Scarborough, and Halifax Town, culminating with a brief spell in the Hong Kong 1st division.

After qualifying as a Sports Therapist in 1996, He gained invaluable experience of Sports related injuries within the Hull Sports Medicine Centre, and in the professional sports arenas.

His initial role in assisting 1st Team physiotherapist Keith Warner at Hull FC (Rugby League) on match days provided an apprenticeship at “The Coal Face” which led on to a medical position with Hull City FC between 1997-2003, managing a variety of duties from treatments, rehabilitation and match day cover.

Notable posts include touring for several years with the GB Ice Hockey Under 18-20’s throughout Europe, and assisting with football coaching duties with St Vincent & Grenadines in their World Cup 2006 qualifiers.

He is also an ‘A’ Licence UEFA qualified coach and currently works both nationally and regionally in the East and West Riding as a Lead Tutor for the Football Association, delivering and assessing a variety of football accredited courses, which has culminated recently to some international visits, notably to Japan, UAE, and Uganda.

Gary Batley

Gary has been a full time coach for more than 20 years having played as a semi professional footballer for 25 years.
Now a fully qualified ‘A’ License coach, Gary has worked for a range of leading UK clubs including Blackburn Rovers, Burnley and Leeds United.

Gary played a key role in the development of current England Stars Aaron Lennon and James Milner and has considerable experience coaching overseas, particularly in the USA.
He also spends a considerable amount of time in Mexico where he has established five football schools with an affiliation to West Ham United.
Gary has attained the Level 3/UEFA B tutor award with The English FA and has been retained by the FA despite a recent numbers reduction review in 2010.
He has also achieved the V2 award under the education framework and is employed by 1st 4 sport as an External Verifier for FA courses in the North East region of the England.
The 55 year old also has certificates in First aid and safeguarding children.
Gary is one of the most highly regarded coaches within the FA Tutor team.

Richard Cooper

I joined Sheffield United FC from school in 1981, where I spent 4 years as a professional player, before moving on to Lincoln City, Exeter City and finishing my career 350 first team appearances later, at Yeovil Town in 1995. At this point I embarked on a coaching career after playing and completed my FA Coaching Certificate (Level 2 equivalent) in 2000 and went on to complete my Uefa ‘A’ Licence in 2005.

I am also a coach educator for The FA, delivering a range of courses in the UK and overseas. I am also involved in The FA’s quality assurance policy and an Internal/External Verifier for 1st4Sport Qualifications, who are the awarding body for the coaching courses in the UK. I am currently the Community Manager of the Lincoln City FC Sport & Education Trust, based at Lincoln City Football Club, who compete in Coca Cola League Two.

Most Notable Memories : Two successive promotions with Sheffield United, making my Football League debut at the age of 18 and captaining the tour of the Far East in 1983.

Most Notable Disappointments : Leaving Sheffield United (the club I had supported as a young boy) and two successive relegations with Lincoln City.

Personal : Born 07/05/1965, married to Jane and we have two boys, Daniel 22 and Oliver 19.



Nigel Quincey

Nigel is a former RAF Squadron Leader who is currently working on a consultancy basis for Hartpury College to offer an experienced viewpoint on coaching players for the football academies and mentoring staff in their personal coaching development.

Nigel is a UEFA A license coach and works for the FA as a coach educator, delivering both level 1, 2 and level 3 programmes for the Football Association. He also holds the Academy Managers License and specialises in the development of young players.

During his time in the armed forces, Nigel was Director of Coaching for the RAF for 12 years. He also managed and coached the Combined Services Team and the Royal Air Force Senior and Under 21 teams. He was also responsible for introducing womens football to the Royal Air Force.

Nigel played extensively for Royal Air Force representative teams and had semi professional playing experience with Sutton United, Staines Town, and clubs in Germany and Cyprus.

Prior to the role at Hartpury, Nigel worked for 7 years within the Southampton FC Academy overseeing the technical programme, coach education and was closely linked with development of such players as Gareth Bale, Nathan Dyer and Theo Walcott.

Mark Kearney

Professional player for Everton, Bury and Mansfield Town. He has played 400+ league appearances.
1st team coach at Shrewsbury Town and Mansfield Town, Youth team coach at Northampton Town and Academy coach at Derby County.
He is currently a FA Tesco Skill coach and team leader for Nottinghamshire. He is also an FA tutor for level 1, 2,and new age appropriate module 1.

Refereeing Course

Keith Buller

 He is 44 years old and lives in Bridgwater, Somerset, UK.           

He qualified as a referee in November 1984, and went on to be an English Football League assistant referee list in 1993, until having to retire from this level of football in 2007 due to a serious knee injury. He also refereed at the level just below the Football League for 5 years. The biggest match he officiated in was as an assistant referee in a match between Arsenal and Chelsea. In January 2008 he was appointed as Referees Development Officer for Somerset Football Association, where his role is to recruit, retain and train referees within the county. He does this primarily with the assistance of Richard Melinn.

 

Richard Melinn

He is a full-time Logistics Manager for GP Batteries, a part of the GPI International Group specialising in electronics and dry cell non-hazardous batteries.

He has had a successful playing career as a senior club player and captain, during which he was a youth player for Aldershot Town, and played for Bridgwater Town as well. He retired in 1984 at the age of 29 from playing to become a referee.

He progressed through the ranks of local and regional football as a referee before his active football league career came to a close in 2001. He became a football league assessor in 2002 and has completed many appointments for The FA and The Football League by assessing match officials every weekend during the season. He still referees occasionally on Sundays. He qualified as FA Referee Instructor in 1989. Under the restructuring undertaken in 2008, he was recognised as an FA Referee Tutor.

Apart from getting married, he considers the best decision he made was to take up refereeing, because he has had so much enjoyment and made so many friends and contacts who are always welcoming when he returns to their club. He has just completed 25 years as a referee, and has been involved as a society secretary, chairman, training officer and committee member for his local Bridgwater & District RA.

Apart from his passionate commitment now as Referee County Training Officer for Somerset FA, he enjoys reading sports biographies and visiting different countries.
